Features of medicine in Montenegro
We would like to share the main points of the healthcare system of this beautiful country.
Insurance and obtaining it
If you are applying for a residence permit (temporary stay, “borawak”), you will need to take out insurance. For 30 days it will cost approximately 30 €. After receiving a residence permit for employment, you and your family members will be given state insurance (“green book”), which provides the following benefits:
Free medical care: Clinics, hospitals and specialized clinics provide free services.
Access to expensive research: For a small additional fee, you can undergo, for example, an MRI scan.
Pregnancy and childbirth: Free observation and delivery.
Public and private medicine
Public medicine in Montenegro, as in many other European countries, is primarily intended for basic medical services: vaccinations, childbirth, emergency care, etc. However, it does not always offer a quick appointment with a doctor. You often have to wait in line for a long time.
Our advice: If you want to quickly see a doctor and undergo the necessary tests, you should go to a private clinic.
Private insurance
In addition to state insurance, you can also get private insurance. Best for one year at a time. A budget option with a minimum set of medical services will cost an average of 350 € annually. The more services and examinations you choose to include, the more expensive the insurance will be.
Medicine in Montenegro has its own characteristics. The public system provides basic services, but may not always offer quick access to specialists. Private medicine allows you to get the necessary help faster, but requires additional costs. The choice between public and private medicine depends on your needs and capabilities.
